Councilman Steven J. Flotteron has been a resident of Islip Town since 1995, currently residing in Brightwaters with his wife and children. After graduating from the State University of New York at Fredonia in 1984 with a bachelor's degree, Steve became fully licensed in insurance and equities and opened a successful insurance practice.As a civic leader, Steve teamed up with community leaders from Brentwood and Central Islip to form the Tri-Hamlet Alliance, an organization that lobbied successfully for the New York State Legislature to amend the Uniform District Court Act giving local government entities the power to go beyond neighboring counties to serve summonses to absentee landlords in violation of the law. He also lobbied successfully for the Town of Islip to enhance the Public Nuisance Law calling for stricter requirements.

Since his election and the commencement of his first four-year term of office in January of 2006, Councilman Flotteron has been at the forefront of many issues, initiatives and projects to better the quality of life for Islip Town residents. Councilman Flotteron has:

  • Removed reserved parking spots for elected and appointed officials in all Town lots. (Sponsored resolution on April 25, 2006)
  • Worked to bring a new website to Islip Town residents. (Sponsored resolution on April 25, 2006)
  • Brought the first off-site night Town Board meetings to Islip residents at the Brentwood Country Club. (Sponsored resolution on August 15, 2006)
  • Amended Chapter 68 of the Town Code to tighten laws regarding accessory apartments and rental dwelling units. (Sponsored resolution on April 24, 2007)
  • Brought term limits of three terms to Town Board members. (Co-sponsored resolution on April 24, 2007)
  • Worked to bring the first Accessible Pedestrian Signal (talking crosswalk) for the blind and visually impaired in the Town of Islip to Main Street and Union Avenue in Islip hamlet. (Sponsored resolution on May 8, 2007)
  • Brought a youth-geared golf instruction program, known as Par F.O.R.E. (Fellowship, Opportunity, Resilience, Empowerment) to the Town of Islip. (Sponsored resolution on June 26, 2007)
  • Sponsored various seminars including LIPA energy events on Solar Power and the Bay Shore Marina Visioning process.
  • Sponsored a resolution to "fast track" applications for solar panel installation for commercial buildings and residences. (August 14, 2007)
  • Brought the first Builder's Roundtable to the Town of Islip to explore streamlining Building Department practices and making the application and permit process more efficient.
  • Sponsored a resolution supporting the efforts of the Tobacco Action Coalition to eliminate tobacco advertising from areas seen by children. (October 16, 2007)
  • Sponsored a resolution to bring a partial real property tax exemption for Islip Town veterans who served during the Cold War Era between the dates of 09/02/1945-12/26/1991. (November 27, 2007).
  • Partnered with Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco to distribute Computer Cop, a new Internet safety software helping parents to safeguard their children against predators and destructive behavior.

Councilman Flotteron also serves as a member of the Town of Islip Empire Zone Administrative Board, Economic Development Commission, Resource Recovery Agency, Community Development Agency and also works closely with the Islip Town Environmental Council (ITEC) on environmental issues. Councilman Flotteron continues to actively reach out to civic associations, chambers of commerce, community leaders and residents throughout all of Islip Town as he strives to represent all residents from West Islip to Bayport and Brentwood to Holbrook.
